Our bodies do an amazing job of preventing disease. We have built in defense mechanisms that fight off infections and viruses. Our skin has many bacteria like staph and strep that keep the bad bacteria from entering our bodies. If we get a cut our bodies go into full battle mode to fight and kill any intruders.
On the inside of our bodies these defense mechanisms are at work all of the time. We may be exposed to a virus and never know it because our macrophages will eat the virus up before we even get a symptom. But, if our bodies are in a state of constant battle they may not be able to kill the virus, and in some cases the defense mechanism turns on itself and begins to attack its own tissue, as is the case in rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus. When our bodies are in the fight mode for long periods, chronic inflammation can lead to other disease states like metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, depression, hypertension, heart disease, cancer.
New evidence is out there that would suggest that diet, exercise, sleep and stress can contribute to this state of chronic inflammation. A diet low in carbohydrates, rich in nutrients will help to lower this inflammation along with strenuous exercising at least 30 minutes a day, getting 8 hours of good sleep every night, and reducing emotional stress, through meditation or deep relaxed breathing will lower your risk of chronic inflammation and reduce it if it exists.
Acute inflammation will help prevent a cold or heal an injury, chronic inflammation can destroy our organs. Make steps today to help your bodies do the job they are so good at doing. Eliminate all sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup. Go through your cupboards and through out all white four and refined grains. Fill your refrigerators with vegetables; if you must have fruit, make it only berries. Get up and move, buy a pedometer and get your 10,000 steps in every day, listening to music makes the job much more fun. make sure to get 8 hours of sleep, that is when your body is trying to repair and rejuvenate. Get together with family and friends, talk out the stressors in your life. Be mindful of what you eat and why you are eating, maybe you are just bored or thirsty.
